  1. It’s been bothering me for ages. Who’s that second from the left on the front row? Jane looked and immediately said, “That’s Margaret Knapton”. Of course! Margaret was from Driffield and was a proper hockey player. In those days she was Margaret Perry. When I was a teacher at Hornsea School she married my colleague Steve Knapton in the church at Driffield. We were there. Steve is, as well as being a History teacher, a church minister and when he umpired hockey matches (that’s no doubt how he met her) he would call out before blowing the whistle, “For what we are about to receive may the Lord make us truly thankful”.

    I have no idea how Margaret came to play cricket for Yapham. Can anyone help?
